It's time for a change in focus

Driver education programs play an important role in preparing teens to drive, but the National Safety Council believes driver education is just the beginning of developing safe driving skills. That’s why we’ve created Defensive Driving Course - Alive at 25® and the Alive at 25® Parent Program.

Alive at 25

Alive at 25 is an innovative, young-driver intervention program that bridges the gap between what teens learn in drivers’ ed and what behaviors and skills they need to become responsible, crash-free drivers.

Through interactive media segments, workbook exercises, class discussions and role playing, young drivers learn how to take control of situations by understanding the consequence of their actions. It offers a balanced approach to help teens not only regulate their driving behavior, but also help them deal with the actual issues that can influence their driving behavior.

  • Alive at 25 is the premier defensive driving course for drivers under the age of 25.
  • More than half a million young adults have learned life-saving defensive driving skills through the program.
  • Courts, schools and state patrols nationwide use Alive at 25 in their graduated license and violator programs.

Alive at 25 Parent Program

The role of parents in the learning-to-drive process is paramount. To get young drivers ready for the responsibility, parents need to be armed with the skills and communication techniques to get through to them.

Alive at 25 Parent Program is the first of its kind to identify the risks their young drivers face and help parents reinforce basic driving skills and good decision-making to help their teens become responsible, crash-free drivers.

Open class dialogue provides a platform for parents to learn from other parents as well as the instructor. The course examines Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws, other laws related to safety belts, speeding, alcohol and drugs, and practical solutions to reduce the risks their teens face.

Most importantly, parents will walk away with an effective Parent/Teen Driver Contract and the tools to engage their teens manage their driving experience.

The Hard Truth

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the under 20-year fatality rate in Colorado has dropped 20% since their adoption of the DDC-Alive at 25 Program.

Drivers under age 25 have the highest violation rate in all these categories:

  • Speeding
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Ignoring traffic control devices
  • Improper passing
  • Not yielding right-of-way
  • Illegal turning
